Jacksonville, FL

Monday

IT WAS BACK to reality for George, Monday morning. He, Mike, and Frankie were joined by Frankie’s father at the Y, and they’d decided to do a six-mile run along Riverside Avenue. Frank Sr. had obviously been training, and it showed in the way he kept up with the rest of the group.

“Way to go, Frank,” George said. “You’ll be running the bridges with us in no time.”

“You think?” Frank said.

“I never say anything that I don’t mean,” George said.

“He’s right, Dad,” Frankie said. “You’re looking good today.”

Praise from his son brought a smile to Frank’s face. “I’m feeling good, too. I think the workouts I used to do at the gym weren’t as effective as I thought they were—especially when it comes to cardiovascular fitness.”

That conversation, George later reflected as he stared at the stack of memos on his desk, will probably turn out to be the high point of today. But before he could get started with the day’s paperwork, he received a call from Janet.

“Carl and I need to talk to you, chief,” she said.

“You know where to find me,” he said.

“We’ll be right there.”

George managed to deal with two minor matters before Janet and Carl appeared in his doorway.

“Okay, guys, come on in, have a seat, and tell me what’s got you so riled up this morning,” George said.

They each took a chair, and Janet said, “It’s the mall murders, chief. We’ve had another one.”

“Where?”
